Heat Pump Sizing for NL Winters: 2.5 Ton vs. 5 Ton Explained

Heat pump sizing is one of the most important — and most misunderstood — parts of a good install. Here's how we think about it for Newfoundland homes.

Why sizing matters

An oversized heat pump short-cycles, runs inefficiently, and doesn't dehumidify properly. An undersized one can't keep up in deep cold, runs constantly, and wears out faster.

Our approach

We do an in-home assessment that looks at:

  • Square footage and ceiling height.
  • Insulation quality (visible R-values, age of construction).
  • Window count, orientation, and quality.
  • Exposure (windward, sheltered, coastal).
  • Existing or planned ductwork.

We don't size off a chart from the back of a brochure. We measure the home.

Common sizes for NL homes

  • 2.5 ton: smaller homes, well-insulated, good layout.
  • 3 ton: typical mid-size home.
  • 4 ton: larger homes or homes with weaker insulation.
  • 5 ton: large homes or those with significant exposure.

Aux heat is part of sizing

Most NL central ducted installs include a 10 kW or 15 kW auxiliary heat kit. The combined heat pump + aux capacity is what matters during the deep cold.
