The short version
- Central ducted — Best for whole-home comfort in homes that already have ductwork (or that have accessible space for new ductwork). One thermostat, one outdoor unit, one indoor air handler.
- Mini-split — Best for homes without ductwork, additions, single problem rooms, or open layouts where one or two strategically placed indoor heads cover the space.
Central ducted heat pump
Pros:
- Whole-home comfort with one system.
- Single thermostat keeps things simple.
- Can replace a furnace or oil system one-for-one.
Cons:
- Requires functional ductwork (or new ductwork installation).
- Higher upfront cost in homes that need duct retrofits.
Mini-split
Pros:
- No ductwork required.
- Per-room temperature control with multi-zone systems.
- Lower upfront cost in homes without ducts.
Cons:
- Multiple indoor heads can be visually busier than a single ducted system.
- Whole-home coverage requires multiple heads.
